UK scientists worry vaccines may not protect against coronavirus variant found in South Africa
While optimistic about existing vaccines’ ability to protect against a mutation in the COVID-19 disease first seen in the United Kingdom, scientists are concerned about anothervariant in South Africa. The variant has multiple modifications to the spike protein, which helps infect human cells, potentially making it less susceptible to current vaccines. Manufacturers are undertaking trials to determine this with certainty, and have indicated modifications could be made to their vaccines in about six weeks time.
