Rise of Delta variant puts Boris Johnson in a tough spot as he weighs whether Britain should fully reopen next week
The concern over the sharp rise of cases linked to the viral strain known as the Delta variant, discovered in India, is increasing. British scientists estimate it to be at least 40% more infectious than the UK’s previously dominant strain, named Alpha. The Delta variant is set to become the dominant strain in Britain; this has resulted in the government having to make important decisions regarding the reopening of the country. Despite steady rates of vaccination, COVID-19 cases have continued to surge, and Boris Johnson’s cabinet will soon have to decide whether to delay full reopening by (at least) two weeks.
