A large study out of the Montreal Heart Institute has found that colchicine, an old and well-known anti-inflammatory drug, can improve COVID-19 patient outcomes. Out of a pool of 4,200 participants, those with a confirmed positive test for COVID-19 saw hospitalization reduced by 25%, death by 44% and the need for mechanical ventilation by 50%. Colchicine is a relatively cheap and readily available drug most commonly used to treat gout. This study has yet to be peer reviewed. Other organizations have urged physicians to be cautious about prescribing colchicine to treat COVID-19 pending clearer direction.
