The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is recommending that Canadians receive the same COVID-19 vaccine for both doses of it. In the circumstances that someone is unaware of which vaccine they’ve received, or that it is unavailable, a second dose can be completed with a vaccine that is a similar type. The two vaccines currently approved in Canada are both messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines. Canadians being administered a COVID-19 vaccine are to be given documentation on manufacturer and lot number to allow for appropriate follow up. Right now, there is little clinical data available as to the safety or effectiveness of mixing COVID-19 vaccine types, such as mRNA and adenovirus-based vaccines.
